Turn the Town Pink

"Throughout the month of May, Fort Wayne Neighborhoods, businesses, city departments and the public will team up to proudly show their support for the fight against breast cancer. The pink ribbons you see are part of The Vera Bradley Foundation is sponsoring Breast Cancer's Annual Turn the Town Pink Events to rais funds for breast cancer research at the Indiana University Simon Cancer Center.

The Foundation is "seeking additional individuals who are interested in coordinating a Pink Ribbon Campaign in their neighborhood this spring. It is simple and fun for neighborhoods to get involved. We will supply information and order forms. You can email them to your residents, or we can supply hard copies for distribution. We need key volunteers in each neighborhood to collect the orders and deliver the ribbon kits. As part of the campaign we also need volunteers to help assemble the ribbon kits. The kit assembly will be organized into fun Vera Bradley 'workdays' at one of the Vera Bradley locations or at a committee member's home."

The deadline for signing up for our neighborhood has passed, but anyone wishing to get involved is invited to contact the Vera Bradley Foundation at Foundation@verabradley.com or at (260) 207-5105.

Association Meeting

The next general meeting of the Lakeshores Community Association is schedule for April 23, 2012 at the Avalon Missionary Church (on Premiere Dr). Topics of discussion will include:

Broadview Dirt and Flower Program

Some changes are anticipated in the way this popular program works, so come to the meeting to learn what those changes will be. Also, remember that this great program is only available to dues-paying residents of the Association.

Guest Speaker

A representative of Waste Management will be talking to us about the single-bin recycling program.

2012 Association Dues

The Association dues for 2012 are $25 and were due in January. If you have not yet paid your 2012 dues, please do so as soon as possible. A form has been provided at the end of this newsletter.

Tree Removal & Replacement

Although the city has completed the current round of tree removal and replanting, the stump removal is still underway. After the stumps are removed they will be filled with dirt and grass seed will be planted.

The young trees that have been planted will require care on the part of the residents after the growing season begins. Each tree needs to be watered twice per week with five gallons of water each time. If one of the newly planted trees dies, please notify the association. They are guaranteed for one year and will be replaced if the city receives timely notification.

Police Patrols

Officer Joshua Franciscy, Police liaison for the Lake Shores Community Association, recently talked with Association President, Walt Halley. Franciscy stated that the police are routinely patrolling our neighborhood, both day and night. He also said that, while there have been no recent break-ins reported in Lake Shores, other neighborhoods are reporting thefts from unlocked vehicles. Lake Shores' residents, whose cars are parked on our streets or in the driveways, are encouraged to keep their vehicles locked.

The Lake Shore Community Blog

We have set up a blog to provide Lake Shores Residents with up-to-date news and information about the Lake  Shores’ community. The blog can be found on the internet at: http://lakeshoresblog.blogspot.com/

If you do not have a computer, you can access the blog using the computers available, free of charge; at the Waynedale Library or any of the other branches of the Allen County Public Library. Don’t be shy! Ask one of the librarians to help you. The blog also offers you the opportunity to post comments or questions. We will try to bring new information to you as soon as it is available so that you are not dependent on just the newsletter or word-of-mouth.

New Residents and Empty Houses

If someone new moves into the neighborhood please make sure to notify the Welcome Committee (Veda Klug 747-4457).

Also, notify any board member if you become aware of houses that become vacant.

Just a reminder that good neighbors look out for one another so if you haven’t seen a neighbor in a while, check in on them to make certain they are okay.  A special thank you to those of you who shovel their sidewalks and driveways and especially to those who lend a hand to neighbors who need it. Also, remember that good neighbors take proper care of their pets.

According to the Ordinances of the City of Fort Wayne, “all dogs and cats must be under the physical control of the owner when off the owner’s property. Their excrement must be removed immediately. . . .”

With respect to barking dogs, the Ordinance reads: “No person shall allow an animal to bark, yelp, whine, howl, . . . continuously for 15 minutes or for a total of 20 minutes in a one hour period.”

Stump Removal and Winter Safety

Stump removal has begun in Lake Shores. How quickly it will be finished, now that winter has finally decided to come, remains to be seen.

Now that snow is on the ground, be alert for ice underneath, which makes for dangeous driving, walking and jogging. Neighbors are encouraged to do their best to keep sidewalks clear and don't be shy about offering help to a neighbor who needs it.

Also, if you are following the blog, your comments are always welcome. Please tell your neighbors about the blog, as well. The more it is used the more useful it will be. You can also follow the blog. There are two followers at present. The Google Blog software allows messaging between blog members so ask your friends to follow it, too.

Can emergency personnel find your home?

When board members were driving the neighborhood to select the homes for this year's holiday decoration contest, they commented that it was difficult to find the street address of numerous homes in the Lake Shores Community.

How quickly would Police, Fire, or EMT personnel be able to find your home in an emergency. Even a single minute lost, while emergency personnel search for a house number, could be the difference between life and death. 

Please make sure that your street number is readily visible in both daylight and darkness. It could very well save the life of you or a member of your family!

Association Meeting of November 14, 2011

A general meeting of the Lakeshores Community Association took place at 7:00 PM on November 14^th at the Avalon Missionary Church:

Election of Officers and Board Members

Given that all candidates were unopposed, the following individuals were appointed: Walt Halley as the new President; Tony Landon as Vice President of the west side. Jim and Carolyn Johnson have accepted appointment to the two vacant board positions from the east side. The position of Vice President of the east side remains vacant at this time. Residents interested in serving are encouraged to contact Walt Halley.

Community Harvest Food Bank

A motion was approved to donate $300 to the Community Harvest Food Bank during this holiday season. Community Harvest Food Bank helps supply other local food banks such as those at Avalon Missionary Church and St. Therese Catholic Church.

Waynedale Community Picnic

A motion was also approved to donate $200 to this event at the Waynedale Park in August of 2012.

Radon Kits

It was announced that Radon Test Kits are available, free of charge, through a federal program. Please contact our President: Walt Halley at 747-0165.

Re-Zoning

With the help of local attorney and Lake Shores resident, Josh Turkow, the Association was successful getting both Lake Shores and the Winterset additions rezoned from RP to R1. This will help assure the preservation of our neighborhoods as a “single-family-dwelling” community. Thank you to those who attended the meeting of the Board of Zoning Appeals. The Board was impressed with our turnout.

Ash Tree Removal

The city’s ash tree removal program continues. It was reported that the city will be coming back around to remove stumps. The city is planning to replace only [50 or 60] percent of the trees that have been removed. We can pay for the replacement of additional trees and the Board is planning to seek CEDIT funds to replace an additional ten trees. Whether or not we want to replace additional trees with funds from the Association treasury is a subject for discussion.

Other News

Break-ins

You may be aware of increased police patrols in our area. Recently, there have been break-ins of homes in our neighborhood. All neighbors are encouraged to take extra precautions to secure their homes and to be alert to unusual activities in the neighborhood. If you feel you are in immediate danger, do not hesitate to call 911.

Holiday Decorations

Just a reminder that the judging of holiday decorations will take place December 15 - 21. Prizes are: 1st Place - $100;

2nd Place

- $50; and

3rd Place

- $25. Prizes are awarded for both the east and west sides.

Annual Association Dues

Association dues in the amount of $25.00 are due in January of 2012. These dues are important and enable the Association to serve the residents of our community. A Benefits that flow to dues-paying residents include:

• Plant and Dirt program through Broadview Florist & Greenhouse
• Printing and mailing the Lake Shores Community Association Newsletter
• Printing and mailing the Association Directory
• The bi-annual garage sale: advertising and signs
• Prize awards to both the Yard of the Month and Holiday Decoration winners both of which reward residents who work hard to keep our neighborhood beautiful
• Recording of association by-laws
• The dues also enabled us to successfully seek a rezoning of out neighborhood from RP to R1

Future projects under consideration:

• Replacement of trees over-and-above what the city will do.
• Combining the restrictive covenants of the various parts of Lake Shores
• Investigation into the feasibility of using public funds to construct a sound barrier along the Airport Expressway

We urge you to be dues-paying members of the Association. Please note that failure to pay dues could result in a lien against your property in the event you choose to sell your home.
